Privacy Analysis and Implementation for Developers

What can you use the app for?

Privacy Choice Policymaker is an app for developers who create content and apps for web stores and app stores. Almost all of them require a privacy policy, and many developers, frustrated by the legal language, resort to copying and pasting someone else’s policy rather than taking the time to actually describe what they do with a user’s information, which can leave them open to severe legal consequences. Not having a privacy policy at all can get the developer bounced from the app store at great cost. Privacy Choice Policymaker offers an easy template app that addresses the most important features of a privacy policy and helps to make that policy readable for human beings by phrasing it in clear, succinct terms. Privacy Choice Policymaker also offers an app scan that will help users determine what is actually happening to customer data.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Privacy Choice Policymaker was created by Jim Brock in 2011 as an expansion to the popular Privacy Choice scoring app which would score different websites and apps based upon how well they were protecting user’s privacy.

What are the differences to other apps?

Privacy Choice Policymaker is a unique app designed with developers in mind, one that helps developers do a better job of handling user’s privacy. It helps developers learn how they are actually handling user privacy in addition to helping them craft a good, workable privacy policy. It protects both consumers and the app developers.

Alternative Apps
How does the web app look and feel to use?

Using the app is wonderfully simple. The site itself is very clean. If the app is for kids it helps the user create a badge that helps parents understand the site quickly. It asks the user six basic questions on the most common points of privacy: whether or not the user displays ads or sells information to advertisers, whether or not the app displays location data, whether or not the app is social, whether it allows in-app purchases, whether it links to external websites and the minimum age. Ten multiple choice questions later (about data, location, access, deletion, sharing, ad tracking, contact, vendors, security, and special considerations) the process is done, and the user is ready to publish the privacy policy.

How does the registration process work?

Users don’t even have to register until they’ve created a privacy policy. Then, the users provide an e-mail address and the website URL, allowing the user to quickly register for the service.

What does it cost to use the application?

The application is free to use. There are no ads on the site.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Anyone with a website or app that collects user data or deals with user data at all could benefit from Privacy Choice Policymaker. It helps the user serve their customers better while also handling legal concerns quickly and efficiently, though Privacy Choice Policymaker does recommend that users have a lawyer review the auto-generated policies just in case. It’s certainly a great way to get the users to think about the way that they are handling data and privacy concerns. This app has a very specific audience and wouldn’t matter to people outside of that audience, but those who are in this app’s target market will find it invaluable.
